There are several methods I use for staining and aging primitive dolls. A lot of times it depends on the doll and how much of a aged effect you want on it. In this tutorial I'll share with you the two most popular methods I've used.
Coffee Staining
Coffee can create a really nice dark stain. I use it on dolls that I really want to look very worn.
Supplies:
Instant coffee
Water
Bowl
Sponge Brush or Spray bottle
Mix your coffee with one part water and stir. You can make it darker by adding more coffee. Use a spray bottle to spray it on your doll. Or you can use a sponge brush and brush it on your doll. If you want your doll to look aged in only certain areas only spray or brush on the coffee in the areas you want. Set the doll outside in the sun.
Tea Staining
Supplies:
Tea bags
Boiled Water
Bowl
Sponge Brush or Spray bottle
Mix your tea with boiled water stir. You can make it darker by adding more tea bags. Use a spray bottle to spray it on your doll. Or you can use a sponge brush and brush it on your doll. If you want your doll to look aged in only certain areas only spray or brush on the coffee in the areas you want. Set the doll outside in the sun.
Aging the Doll Once I'm done staining my dolls I give them a aged look by sanding the doll in various spots and rubbing cinnamon on them. Some people like to rub it all over the doll while others like to just rub it here and there.
